blogging

First of all, I would like to say that launching a blog is a novel, fresh and distinct approach for learning and thinking. I have never had any interesting experience like this class before. And I even don’t have my own blog before, so this kind of communication means a lot to me. I thought launching a blog is really an effective way of sharing and exchanging thoughts and ideas because most students rarely have the opportunity having conversations each other during or after the class. It’s more like a living style that we live right now. We prefer online communication much better than regular interact. So I do benefit a lot from skimming other people’s blogs.

Compare to reading text book to review our class, I think writing entry in my blog is a kind of easier job to do. Through reading blogs, I acquired a lot knowledge related to our class. On the other hand, the management topics through the professor’s blog are helpful and challenging. I am always interested in those kinds of outside reading.

Besides, launching a blog made my study fun and flexible. I have found a platform that I can express and present myself freely at any moment. Even when we finished the class this term, I would definitely continuously renew my blog talking about every interesting thing happened to me. It is a funny way to abreact myself anyway.

The management of McDonald

Before I was doing this assignment, I carefully did the following 4 steps.

Step 1: Go to any McDonald’s restaurant. You will need $2 to complete this assignment.

Step 2: Place the following order from the “Dollar Menu”:

1 small hamburger WITH EXACTLY 4 PICKLES ON IT (you must stress exactly FOUR pickles, this is important to this assignment)
AND
1 small order of French Fries WITH NO SALT.

Important: Request a printed receipt that shows this exact order. You must have an original receipt to get the extra credit.

Step 3: Carefully watch the management process involved in completing your order.
Time how long it takes the staff to complete this special order. Make note of
the challenges presented by your special order.

Step 4: Check to make sure your order is accurate. If it is not, please ask the personnel
to correct your order.

After above 4 steps, there were 2 more questions:

1. Document all the steps it took to complete this special order. What was the exact process the staff went through to complete this order? How many people got involved? How long did it take to complete the order? How were you treated during ordering, and while you were waiting? Was the order completed correctly?

As more and more people getting concerned about healthy lifestyle, McDonald’s is constantly reviewing the levels of salt in its products, and they actually provide French Fries with salt free. When they took an order, people serving the French Fries put the fresh fried fries with no salt into the package before they put salt all over them. So my order of French Fries with no salt almost didn’t take the extra waiting time.

When I ordered the small hamburger with exactly four pickles on it, the cashier put my order into the computer’s special menu which satisfied all kinds of customers’ special request. The manager on duty got the order information back in the operation area and asked people who make the hamburger to make my hamburger specifically according to the extraordinary menu. It took me a little longer time to wait because they need to separately produce rather than make a batch of hamburgers at the same time as usual. From order to serving, there are only three stuffs involved the whole management process, cashier, manager and people make the hamburger. It took me about four minutes to complete the order and it done without fault. During the whole service, they took my order carefully and responded normally. For my particular requirement they didn’t have any doubt and discontentment.

2, Analyze the management process you witnessed. How would you rate the staff’s manufacturing (order preparation), communications, coordination, and customer service processes? If you were brought in as a consultant to McDonald’s to help them improve their efficiency, what recommendations would you make to improve operations during special orders?

During the whole management process of special orders, the communication and coordination of the stuffs in McDonald’s are smooth and efficient. Received the pre-classified orders from a manager can greatly improve the speed of the foods makers. Adopting the approach of product line in the factory, one food maker only need to focus on a singular sort of food, even there are some especial requests on the menu, they can take care it very well and can hardly reduce their producing speed.

However, the special order could generate additional works and waste more time for the cashier. We need our stuffs to be more patient and careful. After the food has been done, it still got the chance of mixed up the order number. To improve efficiency of operations, the food maker should take an extra mark on the box which can show the content clearly to the cashier who is responsible for putting every item together and hand in to the customer face to face. The cashier should not only in charge of money, sometimes during the shortage of employees they can also take care of all the beverages and snacks. For example, when some customer asked for two cups of coffee, one is decaf with a little sugar and a little milk; the other is regular with a lot of sugar and a lot of milk. The cashier could have easily served it because the coffee maker is near them; it’s convenient and fast operation. It is no need to make an exact order to waste other stuffs’ time.

D.I.S.C

I have C high D at the leadership/management diagnostic. I think the test is accurately gauging my management orientation.
The test is acutely right, but I wish I was another type, I prefer I high D over C high D, the reason here is because the C is more toward analysis, but cannot make the decision at all. Even professor said our kinds of people have most “creative mind”, but the lack of decision thing is really bothering me. For the most of the time, the lack of decision means no action, but the vision without action also means nothing =(
So I wish I can be the I high D type with faster decision and getting better relationships with other people. I think I can become this type if I quit thinking things too much and get a little bit more social life and make more friends.
However, I think it is helpful to determine people’s management “type” to better understand where they are coming from, this kind test would also benifits me at the later on working situation, it would let me and others know where do I fit in the position.

Vision

I have many different visions about my own future.
The first goal that in my mind always is to graduate from Baruch College, I am planning to graduate at next summer or fall, right now I am having 92 credits, there are 11 more classes for me to take. It is a challenge for me to finish 11 classes in the next coming winter, spring, and summer sections, plus I have a full time job =( , but I am going to try my best to get it done, since I am taking 18 credits this semester and only a little mess so far, nothing I can’t handle yet.
My second goal is to work in an investment bank, but I know it is not the right time to talk about this kind job, everyone in the finance section are seeking this kind job, (plus under current massive layoffs from banks). This goal may take time to complete, but I am always willing to have a try.
My third goal is to have a MBA degree or a CFA certificate. Either one of them would work. I am a little tent to get a CFA certificate than get a MBA degree because it is cheaper in price and shorter in time. I understand there is a lot work to be done to get a CFA certificate, but it always worth a try.
There are many other goals in my mind still, but these three goals are my mainly concerned.

Desion Desion.... Desion making!

On our Monday’s class activity, I first took the avoidance, and then I used collaborating to handle the conflict.
I took the avoidance when class was in completely mess, after Professor announced the situation about we had to come up our own ideas to treat our grade, people were yelling to each other, but the fact was the ideas going to be passed only if we all vote “yes” at the end of the class period, which I thought was almost impossible, it was extremely hard to make the decision when a guy yelled at me : “ do you want curve or do you want to drop the lowest grade.” I chose avoidance, withdrawal from the chaos, thought there was no chance to win.
I used collaborating when there finally came up a leader, which gave us a surprised option, guess what! We can have both--- the curve and the drop of the lowest grade. He calmed people down, and wrote options on the board to let everyone to choose from these options, and kept asking if everyone agreed. I turned to collaborate; there was a chance, at least.
For the future decision making I would use accommodation, which seeing issue as more important to others than self, it would lead to a more desirable result.

The Egg Plan

Our group went success on the egg plan. We went through every step in the planning process.

Step 1. Define your goals and objectives. We all know to use the straws to protect the egg, show at least 30% of the egg, drop the egg from 10 feet hight, also the deadline are 10 minutes.

Step 2. Determine your resources and current status vis-à-vis objectives. We drew some pictures to show what to do and evaluate those egg and straws see what they actually are.

Step 3. Develop several alternative strategies. We actually came out many ideas, we drew all of them, and also we explain them to everyone in the group.

Step 4. Make a tactical plan. We finally decided to use the strategy with a little “cheat”, to use 4 straws to protect the egg form its bottom, then use rest of the straws attaches the top of the egg in order to make the falling distance short.

Step 5. Implement the plan and evaluate results. The plan turned success when we display it to the whole class. And we all happy with it.
